Udupi: TRV Urges Government to Lift Ban on Sand Mining

Udupi: The members of Tulundu Rakshana Vedike staged a protest in front of the Clock Tower urging the government to lift the ban on sand mining.

Ikalabhava Chittaranjan Das Shetty, District President of TRV, said that the government has ruined the lives of labourers associated with sand mining. “The ban on sand mining has affected the construction labourers. Migrated labourers associated with sand mining are returning back to their homes, creating scarcity of labourers in the district.”

Scarcity of sand is also affecting people because the construction work of their houses and apartments has been stopped or delayed due to scarcity and higher price of sand. He urged the district administration to seriously look into the matter and urge the state government for relaxation in sand mining.

The ban on sand mining has also affected the development work in the district. The state government and the district administration are responsible for creating hurdles in the construction work which is affecting the lives of labourers. The district administration should soon lift the ban on sand mining, if not, severe protests will be held, he added.

Office bearers of Tulundu Rakshana Vedike were present.

  1. Lifting of sand must be regulated to the minimum and should be restricted only to see that it does not damage the safety of surrounding area. The law enforcement should be restricted to the mining sites and not country wide. It should not be over regulated to become a cause to give rise to mining mafia and corruption.

People are adversely affected by sand related illegal activities. Even all regulations on sand could be removed, for removal would cause negligible problems than the restrictive laws.
