US stocks plunge on global sell-off

New York, Jan 8 (IANS) The US stocks slumped for a second straight day on Thursday, as global markets rout and falling oil prices continued to weigh on Wall Street.

The Dow tumbled 2.32 percent, and the S&P 500 dropped 2.37 percent, while the Nasdaq shed 3.03 percent, Xinhua news agency reported.

US dollar mixed against other major currencies

The US dollar traded mixed against most major currencies on Thursday before the non-farm payrolls report due on Friday.

Traders were looking to the key December employment data, the first jobs report since the US Federal Reserve’s mid-December decision to raise its interest rates, Xinhua news agency reported.

Federal Reserve expected the US economic conditions would evolve in a manner that would warrant only gradual increases in the federal funds rate, according to the minutes released by the Fed on Wednesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was down 0.98 percent at 98.207 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro gained to $1.0925 from $1.0793 of the previous session, and the British pound decreased to $1.4617 from $1.4630. The Australian dollar went down to $0.7001 from $0.7059.

The dollar bought 117.54 Japanese yen, lower than 118.43 yen of the previous session. The dollar moved down to 0.9933 Swiss francs from 1.0064 Swiss francs, and it moved down to 1.4086 Canadian dollars from 1.4096 Canadian dollars.
