We are improving governance: PM
New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that his goverment had dramatically improved the quality of governance.
Addressing the nation on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day, he said his government had take decisions to help people make online booking to visit hospitals.
Citing the example of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, he said similar changes had been brought about in 40 major hospitals across the country.
Similarly, now, in just one minute, it had become possible to generate as many as 15,000 railway tickets, he said.
“When I talk about suraj (good governance) … the meaning is to bring changes in the life of the common man,” he said.
Modi salutes Gandhi, Nehru, Patel
New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
“It is due to their efforts that we today enjoy freedom,” Modi said in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort here.
“Every Indian has worked for the country. Swaraj came with their contributions. Today, to convert this Swaraj to Suraj (good governance) should be our goal,” he said.
India must scale newer heights: PM
New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) The energy in India must help it to scale newer heights of progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.
Addressing the nation on Independence Day, the Prime Minister said: “Today on this special day, I convey my greetings to 125 crore Indians and the Indian community living overseas.
“May this energy guide the nation to scale newer heights of progress in the years to come.”
PM vows to distribute 77 crore LED lights
New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said saving energy was a focus of his government and pledged to distribute 77 crore electricity efficient LED lights at a subsidized rate of Rs 50 each.
“We want to distribute 77 crore more LED bulbs. I urge you all to use LED bulbs, save energy and take part in helping our nation,” Modi said in his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.
“When 77 crore LED lights will be used in the country, India can save up to 20,000 MW energy and electricity worth around Rs 125 crore.”
He said the government had brought down the cost of a Rs 350 LED bulb to Rs 50.
“I do not want to ask where all that money used to go (during the previous governments). I am happy to inform you that we have distributed 13 crore such bulbs.”
Modi said when he took power in 2014, more than 18,000 villages in India did not have electricity.
“When we came to power, we decided they must get electricity within a thousand days. Not even half the time has passed and 10,000 villages have got already electricity.”
Government has made public enterprises profitable: PM
New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday made a veiled attack on the previous governments and said state-owned enterprises were set up to fail or to sell them out.
“Now things have changed,” Modi said in his Independence Day speech from the historic Red Fort.
He said state-owned Air India, telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Shipping Corporation Of India Ltd now have operating profits.
“Air India that used to be criticized earlier has an operating profit. While every telecom company in the world flourished, BSNL used to run in losses. Today, BSNL too has an operating profit,” Modi said.
Will change middle class’ fear of taxation
New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday the common people are more scared of income tax officials than the police, adding that his government will change this.
“The middle class is more bothered about tax than the police. This situation needs to change… I will change it,” Modi said in his speech from Red Fort on India’s 70th Independence Day.
“There was a time a honest citizen would pay tax, but once the money went into the government’s coffers, refunds would take months,” the prime minister said referring to refunds of tax deducted at source.
“Now we give refunds online and it is given in weeks,” he said.
