Women’s Park ‘Vanita Vana’ may be Renamed as ‘Indira Priyadarshini Vanita Vana’

Exclusive for Women Park ‘Vanita Vana’ may be Renamed as ‘Indira Priyadarshini Vanita Vana’

Mangaluru: Even though District in-charge minister had inaugurated the ‘Vanita Vana’ – an exclusive Women’s Park located at Hat Hill near Air India Office on August 22, 2011, the work on this park was stalled for years for unwanted reasons. This park was supposed to be the model park in the state, and since the park is located in 1 and a half acre of land, there will be a lot of visitors in future. Ramanath Rai had then said that since there is a necessity to protect and preserve the environment, the park is designed giving a natural taste of environment. If required more space in future, the land acquisition will be done, he had added. The fund of Rs 2 lakh each from MP fund, MLA fund and District in charge fund was given for the development of the park.

The park ‘Vanita Vana’ was devoted specially for the women and children. The park had been designed by Venkatesh Pai of Pai Lands and the landscape of Rs 25 lakhs was to be done. Even though it took so many years for the park to be completed fully, the present Mayor Kavitha Sanil had put lots of efforts in giving a new facelift to this park, which will be exclusively meant for Women and Children. ‘Vanita Vana” with an extreme makeover which was supposed to be launched this month has been postponed to 19 November to commemorate the Birth Centenary of Late Indira Gandhi.

Mayor Kavitha had an intention, why not have an exclusive park for women, where they can have their own space to confer, have their own place for meetings amidst the lush green surroundings. And there is also a brand new canopy/pergola, which can accommodate nearly 100 women at a time- and these days few women have already started practicing yoga there. Apart from that, the Park has a well laid out walkways, shade providing flowering and fruit-bearing trees; and there plans to construct an artificial water body or a mini swimming pool, where space has already been allotted for that.

But during the June 19 MCC Council meeting it was mooted a proposal to rename “Vanita Vana” after Late PM Indira Gandhi by Deputy Mayor Rajaneesh who represents the Hat Hill ward, the MCC is planning to rename it as “Indira Priyadarshini Vanita Vana” if everything goes well. Speaking to Team Mangalorean Mayor Kavitha Sanil said, ” The resolution has been referred to the standing committee on town planning for further action. We have also asked citizens for their suggestions or objections in this regard. If everything goes on well, the park will be named after Late Indira Gandhi on her Birth Centenary on 19 November”.

Also speaking to Team Mangalorean Deputy Mayor Rajaneesh, who was a guest of honor at a function organized by Lions Club at Vanita Vana this evening (20 September) said, ” Being a corporator of this area I always wanted this park to be named after Late PM Indira Gandhi. So I put a request during one of the MCC Council meeting, and I am extremely happy that the Mayor and the other councilors have planned to rename the park after Indira Gandhi. It is very apt to name the park after Indira gandhi, who is the symbol of women leadership. Come November 19, 2017 we will look forward to the inauguration of this beautiful park, exclusively for women/children”.

As per MCC Engineers the park is well designed and its green cover has been planned well. The layout of the park was designed akin to modern green spaces seen in resorts. Since the park looks so beautiful, there has been a request from the surrounding neighbours to keep it open for general public- but as promised by the Mayor and earlier plans, this park will be exclusively meant for women and children- Oh well, Women Power/Empowerment, I guess?

  1. How many more public projects and properties are going to be named after Gandhis from Nehru family? Congress has done more damage to secular-democratic values more than anything else. By the way, how come media is silent on this renaming? I remember all the passion and outrage during ‘bavuta gudde’ road incident? What happened? Well, it’s another story!
