Lexicon(www.lexiconin.com) is an online quarterly medical magazine that is conceptualized and operated by medical and para-medical students of the country. Three years back, three medical students came together to create a platform for writers and literature enthusiasts with a medical bend to the mind. Dr Suranjana Basak and Dr Sakhi Shah from Mumbai, Dr Abhijeet Sharma from Manipal who are avid readers & writers themselves, founded Lexicon with a few team members from their patron colleges. Starting with a team of 6, they’re now a team of 45 from all over the country and different continents of the world that strive to encourage medical and para- medical students to raise their voice with the pen.

“The idea of creating a medical magazine was surely brewing in our heads for long, mainly because there wasn’t one. Also, because there’s more to the personalities of medical professionals than what the society assumes. When you start with something new, there’s a lot of thinking and planning that goes on at the back of your mind. It took us some time to execute our plans because we wanted to launch something that would match the noble standards of the medical fraternity. The team of executives that we have is very versatile and dedicated to bring out the best for the readers.” Quipped Dr Suranjana Basak, the Founder & Editorial Director from Mumbai.

When we were in the process of writing a tag line for our venture, we thought long and hard. We chose carefully. It was hard to embody in a few words an undertaking that would be spanning the medical students of an entire nation. We wanted to fill a void no one had ever dreamed of filling. Thus was born Lexicon. An initiative with the aim: ‘Words can, what medicine can’t.

The magazine is run by a core group of highly motivated individuals working tirelessly to satiate the appetite of the medical student designed to be primarily about medicine and its allied fields but with its finger on the pulse of the medical student. The magazine contains not just the scientific articles but also serves as guidance for different career options, features interviews of some renowned personalities, acknowledges the work of exceptional social workers, medical students and NGOs.

“We’ve been lucky and blessed to interact with some of the famous personalities in the health care industry like Dr.Devi Prasad Shetty, Dr V Mohan, Dr Diane Levine(USA), Dr Richard Finkel (USA), Dr Sanjay Desai (USA) and many more” says Spandita Ghosh from Kolkata. What makes this initiative unique is that it is completely online and can be accessed completely free of cost. It contains everything that is informative and a mood blender for any medical undergraduate and postgraduate student. “It is not routine to find enough platforms in India that will recognize the talents of our young doctors at an international scale. Lexicon, gives newbies of the medical fraternity, this very chance to prove that Indian medical students are more than heavy books and competitive entrances,” concludes Dr Abhijeet Sharma, co-founder of Lexicon.

The relationship between Medicine and Literature had lasted for centuries. We wanted to be its latest avatar. With the motto in mind: “For the students, by the students.” It was hard to embody in a few words an undertaking that would be spanning the medical students of an entire nation. We wanted to fill a void no one had ever dreamed of filling. Thus was born Lexicon. The name ‘Lexicon’ is adapted from its Greek origin ‘lexikon’, which means book of words or a branch of knowledge. This initiative of creating a magazine for the medical fraternity couldn’t be defined better.

Lexicon a magazine run by a core group of highly motivated individuals working tirelessly to satiate the appetite of the average medical student cum voracious readers. A magazine run by components of the same audience that it was targeting. A magazine designed primarily to be about medicine and its allied fields. A magazine with its finger on the pulse of the average medical and para medical student.Boasting a readership stretching across the medical student populace of the world, Lexicon aims to be an ever-expanding idea, constantly striving towards the pursuit of excellence.
