World’s top lawmakers meet at UN headquarters

United Nations, Aug 31 (IANS) The Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament opened on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York, with sustainable development goals expected to be the focus.

The meeting is being held at the invitation of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Saber Chowdhury and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and will run till Wednesday.

A draft declaration, titled “Placing Democracy at the Service of Peace and Sustainable Development: Building the World the People Want,” is expected to be adopted at the conference.
