Mangaluru: Remember the 1984 American supernatural comedy film “Ghost Busters” where film stars Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Do you remember the song “Ghostbusters” Lyrics by Ray Parker, “If there’s something strange in your neighborhood; If there’s something weird and it don’t look good – Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters! As the name “Ghost Ryderz” rhyme like “Ghostbusters”, here’s our version of the original song- ” If you wanna see something strange bike stunts; If you wanna see some weird bike stunts-Who Ya Gonna Call? “Ghost-Ryderz”! – that was something on the lighter side of the vein.

To know more about the GhostRyderz- This is the story of India’s first stunt biking group-the Ghost Ryderz? – who are one of the forerunners in the stunt biking or “street freestyling” scene in India. They have done over 200 shows across the country and are the Indian brand ambassadors of the biggest stunt organization in the world. Even people who don’t own a bike would love a chance to pop a wheelie. That wheelie is the first alphabet of Street Freestyling. Given the number of motorcycle enthusiasts in India, the sport has had several participants.Meeting up with friends and popping tricks. That’s pretty much how Ghost Ryderz began in Thiruvananthapuram. They initially came together for road trips and these road trips united several young bikers and gave them a sense of brotherhood and belonging.

Eventually, they took to Orkut (the coolest deal of its time, yaw!) and formed a community to discuss these trips and give it an online voice. Inspired by the Hollywood flick Ghost Rider starring Nicholas Cage, co-founder and team coordinator Suraj Panikker named this team “Ghost Ryder”. They later released a video of the same name documenting their trips and activities. It became a landmark moment for “Ghost Ryderz” as they garnered a lot of attention in and around Kerala. Primarily there was no such organization in Kerala at the time. Their popularity grew much faster than they were prepared for, and their screening process became more selective. The team believed that their videos now needed to be more interesting and shots of riding the motorcycles wouldn’t do anymore. That’s how they started doing stunts, and once they started doing stunts it elevated their excitement and they understood that they had truly discovered their passion.

From there on the growth of the team was exponential in terms of; fans and followers, brand visibility, live performances, commercial shoots, movie shoots and sponsorships. The beginning of stunt riding in India can be attributed mainly to the entry of affordable and higher capacity bikes in the range of 150cc-250cc. Ready to take the sport to the next level, they’re planning to compete in the international arena. If everything goes well, Ghost Ryderz could very well be India’s first export into the world of extreme sports.
