Yakub’s body handed over to family

Nagpur, July 30 (IANS) The body of Yakub Memon, the Mumbai serialmemon bomb blasts convict who was hanged here on Thursday, has been handed over to his family, the authorities said.

Initially, the jail authorities were not inclined to hand over the body and planned to perform the last rites in an isolated spot in the jail campus.

After the hanging, Memon’s brother Sulaiman submitted an application to the jail authorities, urging the body be handed over to enable the family perform the last rites in Mumbai.

The request was immediately processed and permission – with stringent conditions – was granted and the body handed over.

It was taken to Nagpur airport and flown in an air ambulance to Mumbai for the funeral rites scheduled on Thursday evening.

In 2013, the body of Afzal Guru, who was hanged for his involvement in the 2001 parliament attack case, was not handed over to his family. His last rites were performed in Delhi’s Tihar jail.

  1. It is reported that Yakub spoke to his daughter moments before he was hanged till death. He was very calm after speaking to his daughter. Obviously she meant a lot to him. He needed a closure and perhaps wanted her to move on with her life without feeling sad about him. I hope she will have the satisfaction that she made some difference in his life even at his last few minutes. We will not know what he told her or what she said. But it is obvious that had he looked at his family, he would not have been involved in those activities which led to his sentencing.

I do not wish to debate the capital punishment here. I was just wondering about his family members.

    • Dear Dronaachaaryaa, you have attained greater heights in my esteem by giving vent to your feelings towards an unfortunate father and daughter.

To err is human; but to pardon, devine.
