Young IAS officers must have ‘how to work’ attitude: DoPT secretary

New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS) Young IAS officers should make efforts to transform India as the world’s second largest economy by bringing a change in their mindset of “how not to work” to “how to work”, a senior government official said here on Saturday.

“It is their (young IAS officers) responsibility to bring changes in governance, and make efforts to transform India as the second largest economy in the world,” DoPT secretary Sanjay Kothari said here at a day-long national workshop on “Citizen-centric governance”.

Speaking at the workshop, organised by the National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG), the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Kothari advised the young IAS officers to change their mindset from “how not to work” to “how to work”.

Addressing the inaugural session, Kothari said the target of governance reforms should be to make governance process easier for every citizen even living in the remotest part of the country.

He urged the administrators and policy makers to do away with the colonial attitude of governing, and called for reforms in the redundant rules and processes from the colonial era.

The secretary also informed that the government was working to do away with interviews for the lower-level jobs and appoint employees on merit basis.

“This will make the employee feel pride and more efficient personnel will be recruited to the government,” Kothari said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day announced to eliminate the practice of interview-based selections for low-skilled government jobs.

Kothari also pitched for administrative changes to simplify the process of getting SC/ST and domicile certificates.

“Likewise, getting police verification is also a complicated task and this should also be simplified in governance,” he added.
