ZAHRS Brahmavar to hold Krishi Mela on Oct 15 and 16

Udupi: The Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Brahmavar under the jurisdiction of University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga is organizing a two-day “Krishi Mela” on 15th and 16th October 2016 in collaboration with Agricultural Diploma College, Brahmavar, Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Ullal; Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Brahmavar and Mangaluru, NABARD, Mangaluru, Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Watershed Department, Animal Husbandry, Sericulture Fisheries and Forestry Udupi; SKDRDP, Udupi; District Krishik Samaja of Udupi and Mangaluru under the sponsorship of Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development, Cochin said Dr M Hanumanthappa Associate Director of Research, ZAHRS, Brahmavar.

He was speaking at a press meet held at the press club on Thursday, October 13.

The main objective of this Mela is the transfer of latest agricultural technologies through demonstrations, discussions, field visits in the Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station through Seminars cum interactions of Scientists with Farmers. In general, we can say this is the festival of farmers and this Mela will provide a platform for the farmers to solve their field problems.

The Mela will be inaugurated by the Minister of Fisheries, Youth and Sports Welfare and District in-charge Minister for Udupi District, Pramod Madhwaraj. The programme will be presided over by Dr V Vasudevappa, Vice Chancellor, UAHS, Shivamogga. Shobha Karandlaje, Member of Parliament, Udupi – Chikkamagaluru Constituency will inaugurate the Krishimela. Diankara Babu, President, and Sheela K Shetty, Vice President, Zilla Panchayat, Udupi will inaugurate the Integrated Farming System units in the Campus. K M Udupa, Managing Trustee Bharatiya Vikasa Trust, Manipal, will inaugurate the newly constructed Krishimela Platform. The ZAHRS website will be inaugurated by Dr T K Sidderame Gowda and Dr H L Harish, Board Members of UAHS, Shivamogga.

During the Krishimela, organizers have arranged Seminars. On the first day, there will be a seminar on “Cultivation of Plantation Crops”. “Use of modern farm implements in Agriculture” and “Profitable integrated farming systems” are arranged on the second day. The above seminars will be delivered by Eminent Scientists of UAHS, Shivamogga, Scientists of other elite Institutes and Progressive Farmers. During the Krishimela Farmers can also interact with Scientists freely to clarify their field problems.

In addition to this, about 100 stakeholders are expected to put up their stalls to show their agriculture technologies and recent farm machinery. The organizers have requested farmers to participate in large numbers and avail the benefits of the Mela.

The following are the main attractions at the Mela:

  • High yielding rice varieties and seed production
  • Preparation of Dapog nursery and SRI method of paddy cultivation
  • CO-4 Fodder grass demonstration
  • Multi-storied cropping system and nutrient management in coconut and Arecanut.
  • Cashew grafting and soil and water management in cashew gardens.
  • Demonstration of organic manure compost, vermi compost and azolla.
  • Dairy, Poultry, Goat, Rabbit Duck and Fisheries demo units.
  • Exhibition and demonstration of agricultural implements.
  • Demonstration of value-added food products.
  • Exhibition and sale of decorative plants.
  • Attractive Agricultural Exhibition.
