An Untold Story of A Born Musician

  • Music has a profound influence on human beings since time immemorial. It enriches our lives in so many ways. There are uncountable types of music that we have in our society today.

A very inspirational story from a young and enthusiast musician from Mangaluru, Reuben Machado, 22, who is a student at NICO, Nitte University unfolds in this manner. Ever since he was young he developed a keen interest in playing musical instruments. Being inspired by his father Reuben he started imitating him by playing Harmonica at the age of three. His father who was fascinated by musical instruments has a collection of 15 different musical instruments at home. Unknown to the purity of innocence, young Machado equipped with playing Harmonica and Guitar by the time he was in the sixth standard. Also with the influence of the internet, he took the help of YouTube and learned guitar chords.

The changing point came in his life when he was pursuing his B.Com degree. There was an Inter College Competition named ‘40 seconds to Fame’ which meant, to entertain the crowd within 40 seconds. Seeking advice from his father he played Harmonica and Guitar together for the first time in his life for which he won the first place. And from that moment onward he started playing these instruments together and has altogether won the first place five times. His act of imitation has now made him a successful musician of his time. The 22-year-old musician to grasp for more music has started going for flute classes three years back. He plays the Indian classical flute with tempo and melody.

One of the greatest experience Reuben is ever grateful to is being able to perform at the World Cultural Festival 2016 which was held in New Delhi. The festival brought more than 150 countries together in a platform which was staged in 7 and a half acres area. Though he has performed in usual platforms during different functions he is looking forward to being unique. He has contributed musical tunes to Konkani Music Industry, collaborated and shared with several artistes.

When asked if he is given to choose between academic and music, Reuben chose music. He wants music to be a part of his life. He adds saying he has plans to go to Mumbai to seek training from an expert flutist. He wants music both to be professional and personal in his life. Furthermore, this young man has started flute classes and has two students.

He appreciates stage performance but is more open to self-practice. His father is the backbone to what he is today. He gives him full credit and has a dream to achieve through music. He also plays several other instruments like Violin, Ukulele, Saxophone, Keyboard and Pan Flute.

Besides music, he plays cricket and badminton. He has also done public performance through singing. With more than 300 subscribers, Reuben has his own YouTube Channel. Another turning point came when he did a cover of “Despacito” using Harmonica and Guitar which has more than 75 thousand views. He spends his time interacting with fans via social media platforms. He has also performed in college during various events and his friends are his fans.

Born and brought up in Derebail, Mangaluru, this young man has a bright future and more trophies to win.
