Bantwal: Ramappa and Nagendrappa, officials from the department of mining and geology, stopped and conducted a check at B C Road on sand-laden lorries plying towards upcountry districts on Friday.
Six were found with loads in excess of approved load limits. While a lorry is allowed to transport a load weighing 10 to 16 tonnes, a few were found with 23 tonnes. Such overloading is considered not only hazardous in traffic but also likely to damage the roads which do not have the bearing capacity.
Fines of Rs 2,000 were imposed per every tonne in excess of the authorized limit. The Bantwal police joined the operation.
