Belagavi woman allegedly killed by husband after seeking divorce
Belagavi (Karnataka): A 31-year-old woman was allegedly killed on Tuesday by her husband after she sought a divorce, in Amaturu village of Bailahongala taluk in Belagavi district.
The deceased has been identified as Lakshmi Madamageri, a resident of Gollara Oni in Bailahingala town. Her husband, Raju Madamageri, allegedly attacked her with a stone, killing her on the spot, and fled from the scene. He is currently absconding.
According to police, Raju and Lakshmi had fallen in love and got married around five years ago. However, the couple had developed differences over the past few years, following which Lakshmi had reportedly sought a divorce from Raju.
Police said Raju allegedly took Lakshmi from her work place near Amaturu on the pretext of dropping her home. He then allegedly attacked her with a stone and bludgeoned her to death before fleeing the spot.
Following the incident, Bailahongala police launched a search for Raju and are making efforts to trace and arrest him.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
It can be recalled that in December 2025, in Bengaluru, Bhuvaneshwari, a 39-year-old bank assistant manager, was shot dead on a road in west Bengaluru by her estranged husband, Balamurugan, a week after she sent him a divorce notice. The accused surrendered at the Magadi Road police station.
The victim, Bhuvaneshwari, 39, was an assistant manager at the Basaveshwaranagar branch of Union Bank of India and lived in Rajajinagar with her two children. She was shot at close range by her husband, Balamurugan, 40, on 1st Main Road in the Rajajinagar Industrial Area around 6.30 p.m.
Police said the accused fired four rounds at close range as she was returning home from work. He used to work at Capgemini, a multinational IT company.
In January 2026, a divorced woman named Ranjita was stabbed to death in Yellapur after she allegedly refused a marriage proposal from a man named Rafiq. The accused later died by suicide, and the incident led to local protests.
In August 2022, a 24-year-old woman, Chaitra, was hacked to death by her estranged husband, Shivakumar, inside the Holenarsipur court premises in Hassan district immediately following a divorce mediation session.
