Beltangady: Photographer Killed as Retaining Wall at Temple Collapses

Beltangady: Divakar (37) from Mottetadka in Kemminje of Puttur, employed as a photographer in Priya studio in Uppinangady, died when a retaining wall at Shri Panchadurga Parameshwari temple in Koyyur collapsed in the early of Sunday, Mar 8.

He was in Koyyur for the videography of the night-long event as part of the reinstallation of the Brahmakalasha and renovation the premises. The related construction work had been executed lately and a retaining wall also was erected.

However, off-season rains hit the region and the wall collapsed all of a sudden. A few stones fell on Divakar and he was critically injured.

Cruel fate played its own part in the incident. He had finished his job of videography and was on his way back. Suddenly he remembered that he had left behind the battery of the camera while in a hurry to cover another event in the morning. Just as he came to collect it, the tragedy struck.

When the wall collapsed, a large number of people who had gathered and were standing next to the wall had already left. Otherwise there could have been a large number of casualties, said eyewitnesses.

Divakar was the youngest of the three sons of the late Babu Acharya. The brothers have a sister. Divakar was married, with an eighteen-month-old daughter.

His friends said that he lived in a rented house and was working hard for his family because of financial instability. His associate in videography, Bhaskar, has filed a complaint at the town police station.
