Belthangady Varado Celebrates International Women’s Day at Badyar with Grand Festivities
Badyar: The Belthangady Stree Sanghatan marked International Women’s Day with a vibrant celebration held at the St. Raphael Church Grounds in Badyar on March 1st. The event brought together members from across the Belthangady Varado for a day of reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to service.

Gracy Lobo, President of the Belthangady Varado, extended a warm welcome to the assembled gathering and distinguished guests. The program was formally inaugurated with the lighting of a traditional lamp by Fr. Walter D’Mello, Parish Priest of Belthangady and Vicar Forane of Belthangady Varado, accompanied by other dignitaries. The Stree Sanghatan members also took the opportunity to celebrate Fr. Walter’s upcoming birthday, which falls on March 3rd, with a cake-cutting ceremony.
In his address, Fr. Walter D’Mello lauded the women present, stating, “Today, women from 12 units of Belthangady Varado have gathered here to celebrate International Women’s Day. I congratulate each one of you.” He further emphasized the selfless leadership of women within families, urging them to maintain their dignity and act as representatives of love and service within their communities and parishes. Fr. Walter acknowledged the progress made in women’s education and their increasing roles in diverse fields, encouraging the women of Belthangady Varado to continue serving society and reaching out to those in need.
A significant moment of the celebration was the unveiling of the Silver Jubilee Plaque by DCCW Vice President Linette Castelino and Secretary Violet Pereira, signifying a milestone for the organization. Parish Priest of Badyar, Fr. Roshan Crasta, and Superior of Bethany Convent, Badyar, Sr. Janet Rego, were also felicitated on the occasion.
Fr. Roshan Crasta spoke on the theme of the day, highlighting the concept of “Give to Gain.” He encouraged the women to work not only for their rights and equality but also for the betterment of society and their families, urging them to embody this theme in their daily lives.
Sr. Janet Rego emphasized the importance of the day as a tribute to women’s achievements. She acknowledged the historical disparities faced by women and celebrated their current equality with men in society, highlighting their multifaceted roles as daughters, wives, mothers, and sisters. Sr. Janet called for continued respect and support for women, urging men and children to be the backbone of the women in their families.
Fr. Abel, Spiritual Director of Belthangady Varado and Parish Priest of Ujire, also addressed the gathering, commending the spirit of the celebration. He encouraged the women to redouble their enthusiasm as they prepare for the upcoming Silver Jubilee, urging them to strengthen the Varado units. Fr. Abel emphasized the essential role of women in ensuring the beauty and completeness of any endeavor, encouraging them to draw inspiration from the exemplary women in the Holy Bible. He also reminded them to prioritize their family life while preparing for the Jubilee.
Veena Fernandes, Vice President of Belthangady Varado, delivered the vote of thanks. The celebration concluded with a vibrant cultural program presented by each unit, showcasing their talents and creativity. Prizes were awarded to the winners of various competitions, including a flower arrangement contest, the unit with the highest attendance, and the best Baila dance performance.
Fr. Elias D’Souza, Parish Priest of St. Peter Claver Church, Arva, blessed the meal shared by all attendees.
