Bengal: Three held in connection with killing of former Trinamool MLA’s personal assistant
Kolkata: Police on Monday arrested three people in connection with the killing of former Trinamool Congress MLA Sunil Singh’s personal assistant Shekhar Chowdhury alias Bunty. The incident took place in Garulia under Noapara Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.
The 30-year-old was severely beaten up by a few people on August 19. His head was smashed with a brick. Last night, he succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Kolkata.
He was allegedly killed because he had stopped some people from drinking alcohol in the area. Local MLA and state transport minister Arjun Singh met the deceased’s family. The former Trinamool MLA Sunil Singh also condemned the incident.
According to local sources, Bunty lived with his mother, wife and daughter in Garulia. It is alleged that some youths were drinking alcohol in a club near his house last Wednesday night. According to sources, Bunty had forbidden them from drinking alcohol. Bunty initially started arguing and fighting with the youths. Allegedly, he was beaten with bricks due to that argument.
On receiving the news, former Noapara MLA Sunil Singh and his son reached the spot. Bunty was first admitted to a hospital in Barrackpore in serious condition. Later, when his physical condition deteriorated, he was shifted to a hospital in Kolkata. He died there late on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, tension has been brewing in Garulia since Monday morning. The Noapara police have already arrested Biki Chowdhury, Aman Chowdhury and Pintu Chowdhury in connection with this incident.
According to sources, there are several charges against the arrested people, including selling banned drugs. A section of locals claimed that banned drugs, including heroin, have been sold in the area for a long time. They alleged that the police are not taking action despite knowing everything.
CCTV footage of that night has already been released. It shows Bunty being surrounded by a few youths, beaten up and hit with bricks. State Transport and Labour Minister Arjun Singh met Bunty’s family. He assured the family members of his support and all kinds of help.
Former Noapara MLA Sunil Singh said, “There are questions about how heroin is being sold in the area. Why are the police unable to take effective action?”
The Noapara police station has already started questioning the arrested people. An investigation is underway to determine whether anyone else is involved in the incident, following an examination of the CCTV footage.
