BESCOM transforms ‘Clean Up Bengaluru’ into a Citywide Movement
- Thousands of BESCOM officials and staff participate in cleanliness drive under the leadership of MD, Dr. N. Shivashankara

Bengaluru: BESCOM, which has joined hands with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) in its efforts to make Bengaluru a clean and safe city, on Saturday undertook a major drive to remove defunct and unused electrical transformer centres and other equipment from footpaths across several parts of the city. The drive was undertaken under the leadership of BESCOM Managing Director, Dr. N. Shivashankara, with the objective of ensuring safer and obstruction-free walking spaces for the citizens.
As part of the month-long “Clean Up Bengaluru” campaign announced by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Energy and Tourism Minister K.J. George had launched the campaign on August 1 and instructed BESCOM to continue the drive. Accordingly, BESCOM officials and staff participated in the cleanliness drive from 7 a.m. on Saturday.
The drive was launched by BESCOM Managing Director, Dr. N. Shivashankara at 7 a.m. in Yelahanka. The operation was subsequently carried out by BESCOM officials and staff across several areas, including Yelahanka, Sahakar Nagar, Dasarahalli, Hebbal, MSR Nagar, HBR Layout, Krishnarajapura, Channasandra Main Road, Whitefield, Bellandur, HSR Layout, JP Nagar, and Shivajinagar. Defunct and unused electrical transformer centres and other equipment obstructing footpaths were removed from these areas.
BESCOM Managing Director, Dr. N. Shivashankara, along with officers supervising the campaign and senior officials, visited various locations, encouraged the personnel engaged in the cleanliness drive and also participated in the operations. Following the cleaning activities, awareness notices were put up near RMUs, urging people not to dump waste or engage in open urination in the area. Measures were also undertaken to raise GOS rods to a height of seven feet from ground level.
Speaking about the campaign, BESCOM Managing Director, Dr. N. Shivashankara said, “Since the campaign began from August 1 to 8, BESCOM’s Clean-up Bengaluru campaign undertook work on 356 poles, 10 transformer centres, 199 other infrastructure works, and modification of 323 GS operating rods. The campaign also covered cleaning of 1,730 DTC yards, 411 RMU yards, and 383 spun pole/DP yards, along with 101 feeder pillar box rewiring and yard-cleaning works and 39 pole rewiring and yard-cleaning works.”
“BESCOM has always been at the forefront of joining hands with the GBA in efforts to keep Bengaluru clean. As per the directions of the Energy and Tourism Minister, unused electrical equipment and equipment that obstruct pedestrians are being relocated to safe locations under the guidance and leadership of our team of technical experts. Waste accumulated around electrical equipment is also being cleared,” he said.
“BESCOM has extended its support to the Clean Up Bengaluru campaign on a large scale and transformed it into a mass movement. The operation was carried out on Saturday with the participation of hundreds of officers and staff, along with a large team of thousands of power personnel. The drive will continue in the same manner on Sunday as well,” Dr. N. Shivashankara said.
