BJP MLA’s Achievements are Laying Foundation Stone for Projects Sanctioned During Congress Government – J R Lobo
Mangaluru: “We have sanctioned several development projects in Mangalore city and, Smart City is one among them. Recently the MLA of Mangalore South has claimed that he has brought a grant of Rs 4750 crore to Mangalore for development work. He also said that a hanging bridge is being constructed under the Smart City project at a cost of 35 crores from Bolar to Tannirbavi. But the hanging bridge will not serve the purpose because vehicles cannot move on the hanging bridge as it is made of steel. When we were in power, we planned to construct a permanent bridge and connect the old port with the new Port. Nothing has been done related to the smart city project. After constructing the hanging bridge who will maintain it? questioned former MLA J R Lobo in a press meet held at the Congress Bhavan, Mallikatta here on January 18.
Addressing the media persons J R Lobo said, “We aimed to develop the old port and focus on fishing while preparing the proposal for Smart City. But the BJP government did not give any importance to developing fishing activities or the old port. When the Congress government was in power, we used to discuss the projects with the public and take their opinion before sanctioning. Now the BJP MLAs without discussing any development projects with the public sanction them. The BJP MLA is now claiming that he has brought a grant of Rs 4750 crores for the development work in Mangaluru. If it is true, let him release the documents of the funds he brought for the development work. All the development projects were sanctioned during the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah and during my tenure as MLA the funds were sanctioned. The achievements of MLA Vedavyas Kamath are laying the foundation stone for projects sanctioned during my tenure”.
Lobo further said, “When we planned to construct 975 houses for the poor people in Shakti Nagar, the BJP leaders along with the environmentalists raised objection saying that it was a deemed forest area which is far from the truth. I even met the Deputy Commissioner and selected another land in Yekkar and now the forest department has given permission to construct the houses in Shaktinagar. When the election is now nearing, the MLA says that the foundation stone for 975 houses in Shaktinagar will be laid. I took three years to complete all the procedures, like identifying the land, applying for housing, getting permission from the forest department, preparing the DPR and submitting it to the government, holding discussions with 5 nationalized banks for loans, paying valuation tax, calling for tenders and approval. The total cost of the project was Rs 61.50 crore out of which Rs 5.58 crore was sanctioned by the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Board to the DC as the first instalment. In the RTC col 11, it has been mentioned that the land is reserved for Urban housing. In five years MLA Vedavyas Kamath was unable to provide a single house to the poor. I would like to ask the MLA, what was he doing. Why was he not showing any interest in completing the housing project? 975 poor beneficiaries are waiting for this project to be completed. Let him tell what his contribution is to his constituency during the 5 years of his tenure. If I win the elections, I will complete the Housing project in Shaktinagar within 6 months,” Lobo assured.
Lobo also said, “In my tenure, 120 crore rupees had been sanctioned for dredging under the AMRUT Scheme. Fishing and harbour had been given top priority in the smart city project during my tenure. But now the money is being spent in the name of unnecessary development work. The double-engine government is operating at the centre and the state and the local MLAs should go to the centre to bring separate funds for the development of the city. But spending Smart City funds for the road construction work is not right. Instead of misguiding the people, let them release the documents of all the development works sanctioned by the BJP government under the smart city project. BJP could not provide a single house for the poor for five years. In the name of development, BJP is spoiling the city of Mangaluru. The historical A B Shetty circle and Hamilton circle were demolished. The Nehru Maidan donated by the Britto family for sports and recreation is being misused”.
Congress leader Kallige Taranath Shetty, Former Mayor Shashidhar Hegde, Opposition leader Corporator Naveen D’Souza, Congress South Block President Chandrika, Ramanand, Sudheer, Subhodh Alva and others were also present.
