Blood Donation Camp & Ayudha Puja at Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay

Mangaluru: ”Gift of Blood is Gift of Life! Blood is a lifeline and its value is only recognized when we are in need of it to save the lives of our near and dear ones . Do you feel you don’t have much to offer? You have the most precious resource of all: the ability to save a life by donating blood! Help share this invaluable gift with someone in need. If you’re a blood donor, you’re a hero to someone, somewhere, who received your gracious gift of life. The finest gesture one can make is to save life by donating Blood. The blood donor of today may be recipient of tomorrow”

We should all know that “Blood” is an important resource, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. Blood is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies of all kinds (natural disasters, accidents, armed conflicts, etc.) and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.

With the theme “DONATE BLOOD, SAVE LIFE” , Father Muller Hospital Kankanady and Thumbay in association with Popular Front of India (PFI) members Farangipete jointly organized BLOOD DONATION CAMP at Father Muller Hospital Thumbay on 25 October 2020 from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm. More than 50 people donated blood voluntarily.

For the inauguration of the Camp, the dignitaries present were- Rev. Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo, Administrator Father Muller Hospital Thumbay; Dr. Kiran Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Father Muller Hospital Thumbay; Salim Farangipete, President of PFI Bantwal; Abdul Latheef, Kathibaru MJM Thumbay; B.A. Abdul Salam, Director B.A. Group; Mohammed Irfan, Director PFI Farangipete; Habibulla, SKSSF Thumbay and S.B. Founder of ‘Thumbay B A Group’ Dr. B. Ahamed Haji who recently passed away was remembered on this occasion and tribute was paid to him. Salim Farangipete was president for the inaugural programme. During the inaugural programme Dr. Kiran Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Father Muller Hospital Thumbay and Dr. Sudarshan, Medical Officer of PUDU PHC and Nodal Officer of COVID-19 Bantwal T.Q. were felicitated for their service to the COVID – 19 patients. You could call them the TRUE COVID-19 WARRIORS!

The Chief guest in his speech highlighted the need for donating blood and informed the student community of the many Myths that shroud blood donation. He also educated the gathering on the Do’s and Don’ts whilst donating blood and history of the entire blood transfusion process. He emphasized the need for a healthy living by taking adequate precautions in diet and devoting sufficient time for exercise. He stated that the blood is well screened before being passed on to the patients and the transmission of diseases via blood transfusion has been reduced drastically. He concluded by saying that “We make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give !”

In conclusion in my perspective, “A life may depend on a gesture from you, a bottle of Blood. Blood Donation will cost you nothing but it will save a life! Tears of a mother cannot save her Child. But your Blood can. To the young and healthy it’s no loss. To sick it’s hope of life. Donate Blood to give back life. Blood is meant to circulate. Pass it around. Share a little, care a little – Donate Blood. So why not come forward and donate blood and save a life or lives! Blood saves many human lives irrespective of caste, creed, colour, or race. With so many youngsters these days getting into accidents while riding two-wheelers, and also many other people needing blood during emergencies, blood is the need of the hour. Therefore, when you can donate blood, don’t hesitate, go ahead and donate blood, and few lives needing your blood will be saved. Blood Donation is a gentle reminder that one need not have to be a doctor to save lives.

Why Donate Blood? You don’t need a special reason to give blood; you just need your own reason. Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend. Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day. Some believe it is the right thing we do. The number one reason donors say they give blood is because they “want to help others.” Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. And you’ll feel good knowing you’ve helped change a life. Blood Donation is a very noble and precious gesture. Blood can be very useful in emergency situations, road-traffic accidents and diseases for which they are transfusion dependent. Your gesture of blood donation can save some one’s life. So people should come forward and donate blood willingly”.

Ayudha Puja is a part of the Navratri festival (festival of triumph), a Hindu festival which is traditionally celebrated in India. It is also called “Astra Puja”, the synonym for Ayudha Puja. In simple terms, it means “Worship of Instruments”. On the tenth day of the Dasara festival, weapons and tools are worshipped. The Puja is considered a meaningful custom, which focuses specific attention to one’s profession and its related tools and connotes that a divine force is working behind it to perform well and for getting the proper reward.
