Body of Student Who Drowned at Someshwar Beach Found

Ullal: The body of Shobith M. Gowda (18), a first-year B.Com student at a private College in Ujire, who went missing in the sea at Peribail Beach in Someshwar on Saturday evening, was recovered near the beach on Sunday.

Shobith, a resident of Kammaradi in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, had visited the Koragajja shrine in Kuthar with eight fellow students from the Ujire college on Saturday. Later in the evening, the group went to Peribail Beach in Someshwar, where Shobith and another student, Akash, entered the sea for a swim. Both were swept away by strong waves. However, Akash managed to swim back to shore and escaped unhurt.

A search operation was launched for Shobith and continued until late Saturday night. Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Coast Guard, the Home Guards and Ullal police took part in the operation.

Of the nine students, only Shobith and Akash had entered the water, while the other seven remained on the shore, it is learnt.

On Sunday afternoon, members of the Ullal coastal traditional boat and gillnet fishermen’s association, including Asif M.B., Nizam Kotekar, Nazeer Kodi, Razak Kotekar, Mustafa Kotekar and Irfan Kotekar, conducted a search using an emergency traditional fishing boat. They eventually located Shobith’s body in the sea off Peribail, near Uchila.

The body was brought to the Kotekar seashore in the boat and handed over to the police. Ullal police sent it for a post-mortem examination and registered a case.
