Catholic Diocese of Mangalore Calls for Prayer and Fasting Amidst Middle East Crisis
- Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha Urges Faithful to Pray for Peace and Safety of Migrants in the Middle East
Mangaluru: In response to the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, the Diocese of Mangalore has announced special days of prayer and fasting to appeal for global peace and reconciliation.
Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, issued a circular on Thursday, echoing the nationwide call given by Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI). The Bishop expressed deep concern over the ongoing destruction, the tragic loss of innocent lives, and the reluctance of leaders to seek dialogue.
Highlighting a local concern, Bishop Saldanha noted the anxiety gripping families in the coastal region whose loved ones have migrated to the Middle East for employment and are currently living in fear due to the unrest.
To stand in solidarity with those affected by the conflict, the Diocese has outlined the following spiritual observances for the Catholic faithful:
- Sunday, March 8, 2026: To be observed as a ‘Day of Prayer for Peace,’ with a special focus on the Middle East and the protection of innocent lives.
- March 8 to March 14, 2026: The faithful are called upon to pray the Holy Rosary daily, exclusively for the intention of global peace.
- Friday, March 13, 2026: To be observed as a ‘Day of Fasting and Prayer,’ offering penance for the safety of all those impacted by violence and conflict.
The Bishop has directed all Parish Priests within the diocese to read the circular during church services and to utilize digital media platforms to ensure this call to prayer reaches every family. The Diocese hopes that this collective spiritual solidarity will serve as a fervent plea for the cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace.
