So this contest offered a chance for the pretty women out there, where many click either selfies/photography as their salvation and who have been carrying around their DSLR or Smartphones during the Navaratri festival, did click some superb pictures which expressed ‘The Shadow of Durga’ and the Spirit of Durga Puja, by sharing their creative vision with the outside world. So this year, the organizers did something unique to see ‘The Shadow of Durga’” through the contestants eyes.

Even though the Navaratri Festival was celebrated in various temples and places, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all celebrations were held in a low-key manner, with certain restrictions followed as per pandemic guidelines. Meanwhile it’s nice to note that this unique contest did get a positive response amidst the pandemic, thereby keeping the tradition and culture of Navaratri alive. But the BIG surprise is that among the ten selected Photo Shoot depicting Goddess Durga, was a Catholic lass, Ms Aneesha Angelina Monteiro, hailing from Kulshekar in the City.

The festival of Navratri is all about fasting and feasting. However, there’s a lot of restriction, when it comes to the special Navratri ‘Vrat Food’. In fact, the devotees who observe fasts are allowed to consume certain selected foods. It is believed as well as scientifically established that the foods allowed during Navratri are beneficial for health and can keep your body and mind positive and calm. And for this Catholic lass who got selected in this Contest, had to stay away from consuming Dukra Mass or Chicken Sukka for 21-days as a respect for Navaratri festival, where Hindus consume only vegetarian food during the festival days. And yes, Aneesha did sacrifice the good 21-days abstaining from eating any meat delicacies.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Aneesha said, “Being from a Catholic community, I feel proud that I got selected in this Goddess Durga Photo Shoot, and I express my heartfelt thanks to the organizers for giving me a chance to explore my beauty depicting the image of the Goddess. I am grateful to Mrs Mercy Veena D’souza, the proprietor of Mercy Salon for meticulously doing the extreme makeover on me, which got me selected. And also being a non-vegetarian, as a mark of respect towards the festival, where Hindu devotees consume only vegetarian food or fast, I too abstained from eating any kind of meat for 21-days- and it felt really good, going veg from non-veg!
