Caution! House in Ruins may Collapse-Cause Casualties to Pedestrians, Anytime?

Mangaluru: This report is for the kind perusal of MCC Mayor Kavitha Sanil and Ward Corporator (Arya Samaj Road) Naveen D’souza to kindly look into the dilapidated condition of an abandoned house on Arya Samaj Road, which is on the verge of collapsing anytime when heavy rains strike. In the past, Team Mangalorean had highlighted certain safety hazard civic issues in Mangalorean.com, and within no time MCC had taken action in rectifying those issues. In a similar manner, it would be great if the concerned authorities act quickly and rectify this particular safety hazard created by a dilapidated house on Arya Samaj Road- we would really appreciate it!

A neighbour anticipating danger that this house could cause in case it collapses onto the road, speaking to Team Mangalorean said, “Taking quick action regarding this dilapidated house is the need of the hour. Because we are seeing incessant rains recently, it could knock down the house in no time. Regarding the House on Arya Samaj Road, it is supposed to be belonging to the Manelkar Family. It had been given to B.H. Panduranga Pai to live at the time of his marriage to Padmini who was related to the Manelkars.

B.H. Panduranga Pai lived a solitary life with several stray dogs. His wife had passed away a few years ago. Pai passed away on 02/12/2016. Since then the house has been empty, only stray dogs were taking shelter in it. The Roof collapsed 29/08/2017 during the spell of heavy rains damaging a few cars that were parked on the road. Now the wall facing the road has developed big cracks and can collapse onto the footpath and the Road on which several children and elders walk. MCC officials should immediately inspect this house and take necessary action”

Having well said by this neighbour, now it is on the part of MCC to act quickly and do the needful before it is too late. We all know that pedestrians are the most vulnerable on city roads. Right from the dangers of heavy traffic moving in the city to safety hazard issues like dilapidated footpaths, bad roads with craters (potholes), falling trees/branches etc- now this house is yet another safety hazard for pedestrians, and even motorists moving around near it. Numerous pedestrian-related accidents take place every year and about half of them result in casualties. Yet, despite all the brouhaha over pedestrian safety, the city officials and also the police are clueless on the volume of pedestrian traffic and other civic problems in the city. Hoping for the best in rectifying the safety hazard problem on Arya Samaj Road-thank you!
