CID begins investigation in DySP Kallappa case

Chikkamagaluru(WI): A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reached Chikkamagaluru today to go into the kidnap for ransom case in which Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Kallappa Handibag, who committed suicide on July 5, was one of the accused.

Police officials said the CID sleuths visited the police quarters where the DySP allegedly kept the cash he had received from the friends of Tejas Gowda who was kidnapped, apart from the Basavanahalli Police Station where the case was registered. Later,the officers reached Gowda’s residence.

The DySP was found dead on Tuesday at his father-in-law’s house at Murgod in Belagavi.

Tejas Gowda, a resident of the town, was allegedly kidnapped by a gang and reportedly released on June 28 only after a ransom of Rs 10 lakh was paid.

Nataraj, a financier; Praveen Khandya, Bajrang Dal leader, Abhijeet, Naveen Shetty and Shivu were the other accused in the case.

Meanwhile, the CID team will also be visiting Murgod to investigate the alleged suicide by Handibag. The CID team will visit Handibag’s father-in-law’s house. The house has been locked by the local police as part of the investigation. Apart from looking for a suicide note, the team will also look for evidence of harassment by senior police officials and credible evidence.

The body of the late DySP was buried at his native place Hulgund under Harugeri Police Station limits in Raibag taluk in the early hours of July 6. Apart from relatives and villagers, his batch mates and police officials from Chikkamagaluru and Raibag were present.
