Davanagere: Average city boys of his age would have been busy walking along with playing pranks or fiddling with their mobile phones.

But Siddesh (9), of Avaragere, as he was walking along the railway track, showed remarkable presence of mind when he observed a crack in it near the DCM township here on Sunday, Mar 15. He alerted many citizens who were on fitness walk who only gathered without knowing what could be done about it.

But Siddesh, when he spotted the Harihar-Chitradurga train approaching, did one better by taking off his red T-shirt and waving it aloft so that it would be visible to the driver of the train.

Quite expectedly, the driver spotted the alert and stopped the train. On inspection, the driver confirmed that there was a breach in the rail. The engineers were informed and they arrived and set the fault right.

The railway authorities within their discretion gave Siddesh a token gift of Rs 500 which may look paltry. But the civic body and district administration should take cognizance of his act and reward him with some better way of appreciation for saving several lives and property, said many citizens.
