District Administration holds Rehearsal of a Low Key Independence Day Celebration

Mangaluru: 74th Independence Day 2020: India’s Independence Day reminds the country’s citizens of all the sacrifices the freedom fighters have made to secure the country’s future. Since its independence, India has made stellar progress in every field, including education, military and space programmes. Commemorating the nation’s independence from British rule, India will celebrate its 74th Independence Day this year, but with a slight twist. Owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there will be no social gatherings, instead, all states and government offices have been asked to webcast their events and celebrations. In lieu of the precautions taken, there will not be any grand performances during the I-Day celebration on 15 August 2020.
For the FIRST time in the history of Dakshina Kannada the I-Day celebration will be under low key, and there will be no performances, other than a short parade and guard of honour by police personnel. Among the police teams taking part in the guard of honour/parade are – KSRP, DK Police Unit, Civil Police Mangaluru, CAR Mangaluru, Women’s Police Wing, among others. There will be no participation of any school or college teams, since institutions are closed due to pandemic. A rehearsal of the I-Day celebration was held at Nehru Maidan, Mangaluru prior to the 15 August celebration, to be held from 8.45 am onwards, with flag hoisting at 9 am by District Minister In-Charge Kota Srinivas Poojari, Deputy Commissioner, Police Commissioner, MLA’s/MP, politicians and district administration authorities.

The rehearsal was undertaken by the police department, with ACP taking the guard of honour, The Nada geethe/Desha Bhakti Geethe/Raitha Geethe was sung by the students of Canara High School-Dongerekery, Mangaluru under the guidance of Mrs Rachana R, a faculty at the school. The compere for the I-Day celebration will be Mrs Manjula Shetty, from Education Dept, who is a familiar face every year. Following the flag hoisting, guard of honor and chief guest’s speech, nearly 20 Covid-19 Warriors will be felicitated on the occasion.

There will be limited entry for the public, with strict rules of social distancing and wearing face masks. Looking at the arrangements made at the moment, with set up of pandals, shamiyana, banner and few other things, it doesn’t look like it is not even close to the amount of Rs 4.19 lakh that MCC had released an tender notification in a Kannada daily, which raised controversy and a laughing matter.
