DKMO Opposes Animal Slaughterhouses Selling ‘Haram’ Meat, Urge Law Enforcement Agencies to Take Action

Mangaluru: “Based on recent events, it has come to our attention that slaughterhouses in the Belthangady Taluk are selling the meat of animals that have died or injured in accidents. The Dakshina Kannada Muslim Okkutta and the entire Muslim community condemn this incident. This business of selling illegal and unlawful (Haram) meat has been happening repeatedly in Dakshina Kannada district. That is why we are joining hands with one another and opposing such businesses. The few people who are cruelly killing the animals and selling the meat, are bringing a bad name to the entire Muslim community,” said DK Muslim Okkutta President K Ashraf in a press meet held at Hotel Woodlands Bunt’s Hostel here, on June 11.

Addressing the mediapersons Ashraf said, “However, it’s not just Muslims who are involved in this business. People from all religions are involved in such illegal businesses. But only Muslims are getting blamed. All of us from the Muslim community are opposing this, and two of our priests have issued ‘fatwas’ saying that consuming such meat is ‘haram’ for us. We will follow whatever the nation’s law says about consuming such meat.”

Ashraf further said, “However, there is only one legitimate animal slaughterhouse in the entire Dakshina Kannada district, and that is in Kudroli. Due to this, there are several illegal slaughterhouses operating in almost every alleyway. Regarding this issue, the government authorities (along with the district administration and city police department) must come up with a solution. Every taluk must have a fully licensed animal slaughterhouse. Earlier, a doctor appointed by the Municipal Corporation used to inspect the place and approve the license. The district law enforcement agencies must come forward and put an immediate stop to these illegal activities. Otherwise, we are ready to carry out further protests.”
