Don’t Drink and Wed! Bride Calls-Off Wedding

  • A feisty protest and gusty prohibition by the bride wins praise- Bride finds her groom drunk during ceremony, calls off wedding

Like we have traffic rules stating “Don’t Drink and Drive”, I think it’s time to impose one more rule stating, “Don’t Drink and Wed!”. Although we have heard stories happening in the Northern part of India, where brides have called off their weddings simply because their grooms/and their In-laws have not provided them with hygienic toilets. But here is a story of a different kind, where a bride named Preeti Lata from Bhawanipur Village, Bihar called off the wedding when she found out that her would-be husband (Groom), Dheeraj Kumar of Naugachia, Bihar was intoxicated.

Don't Drink and Wed-Bride Calls-Off Wedding

According to sources, a young bride in a remote village of the sleepy Naugachia sub-division in Bhagalpur district has done the unthinkable – shown the guts to call off her wedding. The reason – she found the groom in an inebriated state in the Mantap during rituals. Even though Bihar state is a liquor-Free state, it is not known whether Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s anti-liquor campaign deserves credit for Preeti Lata’s prompt decision or not, the topic is on everyone’s lips in the region.

The wedding of Preeti Lata, a teacher at the Government Middle School, in Bhawanipur village, Bihar had been fixed with Dheeraj Kumar, also a teacher of Government Middle School in Naugachia, Bihar a few days ago. It is learnt that Preeti grew suspicious on seeing Dheeraj misbehaving with her relatives ahead of jaimala (exchange of garlands). Sensing he was drunk, she announced her decision and fled the Mantap after throwing away the garland. Everyone was stunned, while the baraatis (the groom’s entourage) were dancing and the guests were enjoying delicacies when the incident took place.

Sources reveal what Preeti had to say-: “Many people from the groom’s side came and requested me to forgive Dheeraj. But I remained adamant on my decision. I sought forgiveness from my parents and relatives for the disrepute to our family. But since my future was at stake, how could I accept a drunkard as my life partner?”. And the decision by Preeti was fully supported by her family and relatives since she is a teacher and commands respect in society. The bride’s family took the baraatis hostage to recover the dowry paid to them before the rituals. After refund, they were allowed to leave. It is learnt that none from the groom’s side was ready to comment.

Indeed a unique and strange incident, a wedding being cancelled owing to liquor. Beware, all you young men getting married, keep away from liquor, at least on your wedding day?
