Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: A Life of Inspiration for Mangaluru and Thalassery

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was one of India’s most admired scientists and its 11th President. Born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he rose from a modest background through education, hard work, and determination. His contributions to India’s space and missile programmes earned him widespread respect, while his simple lifestyle and affection for students made him a beloved people’s President. He served as President from 2002 to 2007. Even after completing his tenure, he continued to interact with students, encouraging them to dream big, acquire knowledge, and contribute to the nation. His life remains a powerful example of how education, perseverance, and dedication can help overcome limitations.

My visit to Rameswaram was a deeply moving and memorable experience. I visited Dr. Kalam’s ancestral home and explored the surroundings associated with his early life. The simplicity of the place left a lasting impression on me. Reflecting on his journey from a small coastal town to the highest constitutional office in India filled me with renewed confidence and optimism. His life also made me think about the many young people who possess talent but lack confidence in their own abilities. I believe that sharing the memories and lessons associated with Rameswaram with the younger generation can inspire students to dream big, work sincerely, and uphold the values instilled in them by their families and teachers.

Dr. Kalam also had an important connection with Karnataka. Bengaluru played a significant role in his scientific career, particularly through his association with the Aeronautical Development Establishment. His work reminds us that scientific progress depends on strong institutions, dedicated teachers, teamwork, and a willingness to learn from experience. For students in Karnataka, his journey offers a valuable lesson: dreams alone cannot guarantee success; they must be supported by disciplined effort and the determination to translate ideas into action.

His association with Mangaluru is equally meaningful. His visits and interactions with students in the region helped bring his message of education, knowledge, and self-confidence closer to young people. Mangaluru has a rich educational tradition and is home to people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Dr. Kalam’s message resonates with all these communities. He encouraged students to look beyond their immediate circumstances, cultivate scientific curiosity, and use their education for the benefit of society. His life continues to remind young people that their future can be shaped by learning, perseverance, and responsible action.

Dr. Kalam’s visit to Thalassery holds special significance for our region. I have always admired him and the ideas he shared through his speeches and interactions with students. What appeals to me most is his ability to communicate profound ideas in simple language and inspire young people to believe in themselves. His emphasis on dreams, discipline, knowledge, and service holds particular relevance for teachers. I see his message not merely as a source of inspiration but also as a reminder of our responsibility to help students recognise their abilities and develop confidence in their future.

I am proud that the Dharmadam Chandrakala Mohan Rao Cultural Forum, of which I am the president, organised a warm reception when Dr. Kalam’s statue was brought to Thalassery for installation. Local residents and children participated enthusiastically, with many carrying pictures of Dr. Kalam. Their response reflected the affection and respect he inspired among ordinary people. For me, the occasion was a meaningful example of how the memory of a great national figure can bring a community together. Our Forum’s participation also reflected our commitment to preserving educational, cultural, and social values, particularly among the younger generation.
Dr. Kalam’s books continue to convey his vision to readers across generations. Wings of Fire, co-authored with Arun Tiwari, recounts his life journey and the experiences that shaped him. India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium, co-authored with Y. S. Rajan, presents a vision for India’s development. Ignited Minds encourages young people to recognise and realise their potential, while My Journey offers reflections on the experiences and values that influenced his life.

As a Higher Secondary Commerce teacher, I believe these books can benefit students across all academic streams. They encourage reading, independent thinking, discipline, and a sense of responsibility towards society. They also demonstrate how curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to learn can help individuals make meaningful contributions to the nation.

Thalassery and Mangaluru share important coastal connections through education, trade, travel, and community life. People from diverse linguistic and cultural communities have contributed to the growth of both places. Konkani-speaking communities are also an integral part of this wider coastal heritage, preserving their language, customs, culinary traditions and cultural associations while living alongside other communities.

In such a diverse social environment, Dr. Kalam’s message of learning, mutual respect and national unity remains especially relevant. His life demonstrates that cultural identity and national belonging can complement and strengthen each other when accompanied by respect for others and a commitment to the common good.

Dr. Kalam’s birth anniversary on October 15 provides an opportunity to remember not only his achievements as a scientist and President but also his enduring commitment to students and their future. My visit to Rameswaram, my admiration for the ideals associated with his visit to Thalassery, and the participation of our Cultural Forum and local residents in welcoming his statue have deepened my appreciation of his legacy.

I believe these experiences and memories deserve to be shared with the younger generation. The best tribute to Dr. Kalam is to encourage children to read, ask questions, work hard, respect others, and pursue their goals with confidence. His life continues to remind us that achieving extraordinary things is possible while remaining humble, humane, and committed to the future of our country.
