DySP Kallappa Accused in Abduction Case Ends Life

Chikkamagaluru: City subdivision deputy superintendent of police Kallappa Handibag, who was accused of being involved in an abduction case, had evaded arrest and absconded when a case against him was filed in the Basavanahalli police station a few days ago.

The call detail records of his mobile phone and his voice clearly showed his involvement. On Monday, he was suspended from service by the superintendent of police. The same night, he is said to have arrived at Muragod in Belagavi district, the parental place of his wife. Next morning, he tried to end in life by locking himself up in the bedroom and hanging himself, while his wife was in the bathroom.

When his family members came to know about it, he was taken to the local primary health centre in a serious condition. On the advice of doctors there, he was shifted to the KLE hospital in Belagavi, but he was declared dead on arrival.

The root of the matter was the abduction of one Tejas Gowda, who runs a finance business in the city. A group of four or five men had abducted him on June 28. On return from Bengaluru after his release in two days, he filed a complaint at the Basavanahalli police station.

It named DySP Handibag as one of the involved persons, as the abductors had mentioned his departmental number as the one to receive the ransom amount. Unofficial reports said that the officer had been befriended by some anti-social elements and had been dragged into cricket betting craze. A chit fund firm owner and a right-wing activist’s names are also mentioned in the case.

A thoughtless act of indiscretion on the part of the police officer, who came up the hard way, seems to have led to his harsh decision to commit suicide and leave behind a young wife and a tiny child. It has abruptly cut short what would have been a bright career ahead.
