Los Angeles, Sep 18 (IANS) Actress Emily Blunt has “apologised” for the backlash over her joke about the first GOP debate and her new status as an American citizen.

“It was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offense, so I really apologise to those that I caused offense. It was just an offhand joke. I think I’ll probably leave the political jokes to late night or something,” Blunt said on the “Today” show, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Blunt also said she has no regrets about obtaining her new American citizenship.

“It’s really meaningful. You know, I mean, my two favourite people in the world are American – my husband (John Krasinski) and my daughter. It was kind of a special day. Yeah, it was great,” she said.

Blunt previously received backlash after commenting on the first GOP debate.

The “Into the Woods” said at the time: “I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?’ “
