Father Muller Medical College Hosts Hands-On Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop
Mangalore: The Department of ENT, in association with the Department of Anatomy at Father Muller Medical College, successfully organized a two-day CME and hands-on Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop on June 20 and 21, 2025, for postgraduate ENT students from various colleges of Mangalore. The dedicated team consisted of Dr. Vinay V Rao (Organizing chairman), Dr. Adhyasha Surendran (organizing secretary) – from the Department of ENT, and Dr. Somesh S & Dr. Varsha Shenoy as joint organizing secretaries from the Department of Anatomy. Dr. Kumaraswamy Krishnappa, Basavanagudi ENT Centre, Bangalore, was the course director and chief guest for the event. The workshop was designed to enhance surgical skills in otological procedures for postgraduate students. It brought together esteemed faculty members and participants from across the region for two days of immersive learning and practice.
The event commenced with the lamp lighting ceremony, presided over by Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo (Director, FMCI), Rev. Fr. Ajith Menezes (Administrator, FMMC), Rev. Fr. George Jeevan Sequeira (Administrator, FMMCH), Dr. Anthony Sylvan DSouza (Dean, FMMC) and other dignitaries.
Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo expressed gratitude for hosting the workshop at Father Muller for the first time and extended best wishes to all the attending delegates.
Dr. Vinay V Rao (professor and head of ENT department) welcomed participants and emphasized the programme’s significance. Dr. Adhyasha Surendran (Senior resident, ENT department) delivered the vote of thanks. Dr. Gouri Ramesh, second-year PG, hosted the inauguration ceremony.
Day 1 focused on foundational and advanced middle ear procedures. Dr. Deviprasad D (Professor and head, department of ENT) Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, enlightened the delegates with a talk on the anatomy of the temporal bone, emphasizing key anatomical landmarks and surgical considerations. Dr. Kumaraswamy Krishnappa demonstrated Cortical Mastoidectomy, Myringotomy with Grommet Insertion, Stapedotomy, Posterior Tympanotomy, and Epitympanotomy, which was followed by hands-on sessions by the delegates.
These sessions were guided by experienced faculty and provided detailed anatomical orientation and surgical techniques essential for safe and effective ear surgeries.
Day 2 emphasized advanced and complex otological surgeries, including Canal Wall Down Mastoidectomy, Facial Nerve Decompression, Endolymphatic Sac Decompression, cochleostomy, and Labyrinthectomy.
Participants had the opportunity to observe and perform these procedures under expert supervision using high-resolution microscopes and state-of-the-art instrumentation.
The workshop concluded with positive feedback from all attendees, who appreciated the structured approach, expert guidance, and opportunity for direct hands-on experience. The organizing committee thanked all faculty, staff, and participants for making the event a grand success.
