Fire Breaks Out at MRPL’s Coker Hydrotreater Unit; One Injured
Mangaluru: A fire broke out at the Coker Hydrotreater Unit (CHTU) of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) around noon on Wednesday following the rupture of a cold separator operating at high pressure.
According to MRPL, the battery limits of the affected unit were immediately isolated, and the company’s emergency response and firefighting teams were deployed to control and douse the fire. The affected unit was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The fire has been brought under control, although firefighting operations may continue for some time as part of the safe handling of the incident.
One person sustained burn injuries in the incident and was shifted to Srinivas Hospital for treatment. He is reportedly out of danger and is receiving medical attention in the ICU. Other personnel affected in the incident received treatment at the Outpatient Department (OPD).
No casualties or major injuries have been reported.
MRPL said the situation is being closely monitored, with the safety of personnel and the facility being accorded the highest priority. The company has also appealed to people within and outside the MRPL premises not to panic.
Meanwhile, there is no damage to the infrastructure at Mangaluru International Airport. Reports that glass at the airport was shattered are incorrect. The airport, like several areas surrounding the MRPL premises, reportedly felt the impact of the blast.
