Rachana is recognizing the achievers. If I have helped people it is a gift from above. I would like to dedicate this award to my family. I would also like to congratulate Rachana for this award and request them to recognize the people who render their service to society without any expectations”.

Leo Fernandes also shared his struggle to reach this height and was grateful to receive the prestigious award from Rachana.

Addressing the gathering Dr Gladys Menezes said, “It is like a dream for me, that I am standing here to receive this award. When I left my home in 1976, I never dreamt that such things will happen in my life. When I joined the Sisters of Charity I was sent to study medicine but I could not stand during the incision. In the first year of MBBS, I suffered a lot and told my superiors that this wasn’t meant for me and that I want to discontinue. But my superiors were firm and said that they were with me and that I should continue my MBBS education. I completed my education and become a gynaecologist. We grew up in a God-fearing family, with “Fathers discipline and mother’s belief in God”. In my profession, there are a lot of problems because being a Nun I serve in the hospital and I have to face a lot of court cases. If God is with us who can be against us? I thank Rachana for this prestigious award being conferred on me”.

Addressing the gathering Michael D’Souza said, “I would like to dedicate this award to my family. When I do some charity work my son always supports me saying that if I do charity, God will bless us in some or the other way. Today my family is in the US and soon I too will join them. I would like to thank my family members, friends, employees, and well-wishers for allowing me to serve through the EDUCARE programme under the auspices of COPD, Dioceses of Mangalore. Through the EDUCARE programme, 3500 students have benefited and when they send me a thanks letter I feel proud. I have also established a separate fund of Rs 10 crore to help the marginalized sections. I wish Rachana all the best”.

Awardee Dr Laveena also spoke on the occasion. Chief guest Sanjay D’Souza appreciated the good work done by Rachana and recognised the achievers.

Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha delivered the presidential address. Bishop said, “Today all the five achievers have achieved greatness through their Hard work. All the five awardees are the real builders of society, and we should be proud of them”.

Secretary of Rachana Laveena Monetiro delivered the vote of thanks. Leslie Rego compered the programme.
