Food Safety Officials Inspect Ice Manufacturing Units at Mangaluru Fishing Harbour

Mangaluru: Following directions from State Health Minister U.T. Khader, a team led by Dakshina Kannada District Designated Food Safety Officer Dr. Praveen Kumar C.H. inspected ice manufacturing units at the Mangaluru Bunder fishing harbour, where ice is produced for preserving fresh fish.

During the inspection, officials found that the units were purchasing fresh water through water tankers for ice production. The team collected samples of the ice and directed the units to produce ice only after obtaining laboratory reports confirming the quality of the water used in the manufacturing process.

One of the ice manufacturing units is operated by the Mangaluru Trawl Boat Fishermen’s Primary Cooperative Society. Officials observed that the unit was using modern machinery to manufacture clean ice. Water samples used for ice production were collected and sent to a laboratory for testing, they said.

The officials strictly instructed the units to use ice manufactured with good-quality water to preserve fresh and hygienic fish. They also directed the operators to take all necessary precautionary measures to ensure food safety.

Furthermore, the officials issued a strict warning against the use of formalin or any other chemicals to preserve fish.
