Udupi: In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across Mudarangadi and the wider Udupi district, former Mudarangadi Gram Panchayat President, Congress leader, and businessman David D’Souza (55), owner of Prince Point, was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place at around 3 p.m. near D’Souza’s office in Mudarangadi town. According to preliminary police information, the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at close range, reportedly firing three rounds in quick succession. The brazen nature of the attack, carried out in broad daylight, has raised serious concerns over public safety and law and order in the region.

One bullet struck D’Souza in the forehead, while two others hit his hand, causing grievous injuries. Locals and bystanders reportedly rushed to the scene after hearing the gunfire. D’Souza was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, but sources said he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Soon after the incident, personnel from the Padubidri and Shirva Police Stations reached the spot and began a preliminary investigation. The area was cordoned off as police collected evidence and recorded initial statements from witnesses. Senior officers also visited the site to assess the situation and coordinate the response.

The motive behind the killing remains unknown at this stage. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including personal enmity, political rivalry, and business-related disputes. Officials have stated that further inquiry is underway and more details are expected as the investigation progresses.

The killing of David D’Souza, a well-known local figure with political and business connections, has caused deep shock and outrage among residents. Security arrangements in the area have been tightened as police continue their search for the perpetrators.
