Harmony Advocates Hailed as True Patriots at Interfaith Meet in Thottam

Malpe: Celebrations gain true significance when individuals embody the core constitutional principles of equality, liberty, fraternity, and social justice in their lives, remarked Dr Gananath Ekkar, a distinguished folklorist and President of the Dr Shivarama Karanth Trust. Dr Ekkar served as the chief guest at the Interfaith Harmony Meet of All Religions, an event jointly organised by the Samanvaya Sarvadharma Souharda Samiti, Thottam, and the Catholic Sabha, Udupi Region – Thottam Unit, held on Monday evening.

Dr Ekkar emphasised the crucial role of harmony in national development. “Anyone who strives for harmony is a true patriot,” he stated. “Every religion in the world conveys messages of forgiveness, compassion, and love, teaching humanity valuable lessons. Harmony truly flourishes when individuals practice their own faith while understanding and respecting other religions. The fundamental principle of all festivals is to live with love and unity, and above all religions, the religion of humanity is the greatest.”

Social worker Rafiq Master addressed the gathering, highlighting the universal values of love, trust, and faith imparted by all religions. “If we look at others with trust instead of suspicion, there will be no room for problems,” he asserted. “Each of us should become a needle and thread that binds hearts together, not a knife that cuts them apart. The values of every religion are elevated when one grows while helping others grow.”

Dennis D’Souza, Honorary President of the Samanvaya Sarvadharma Souharda Samiti, Thottam, provided the introductory address, setting the stage for the evening’s discussions and celebrations.

The event also served as an occasion to recognise and honour individuals for their contributions to society. Malpe swimmer and rescue expert Eshwar Malpe and his team, renowned for their humanitarian service, were felicitated. District Rajyotsava Award recipients Ramesh Thingalaya and Reginald Furtado were also honoured for their recent achievements.

The programme included a series of cultural performances presented by Thottam Church, CSI Church Malpe, and other participating groups, showcasing the rich diversity of the community.

Distinguished attendees included Rev. Vinay Sandesh, Pastor of CSI Ebenezer Church, Malpe; Yahya Naqwa, Vice President of the Samanvaya Sarvadharma Souharda Samiti, Thottam; Agnel Fernandes, Convenor of the Interfaith Dialogue Commission of Thottam Church; Siraj of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Malpe Unit; Shanthi Picardo, Secretary of the Catholic Sabha; Leslie Aroza, Vice President of the Church Pastoral Council; Blessilla Crasta, Secretary; and Sister Sushma from the local convent, along with office-bearers of the Souharda Samiti and the Catholic Sabha.

Veena Fernandes, President of the Catholic Sabha, extended a warm welcome to the gathering, while Ramesh Thingalaya, President of the Samanvaya Sarvadharma Souharda Samiti, Thottam, delivered the vote of thanks. Lavina Fernandes skillfully compered the programme. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of interfaith dialogue and the vital role of communal harmony in fostering a strong and united society.
