Heatwave Alert Issued for Coastal Karnataka by IMD

Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the coastal districts of Karnataka, specifically Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada, for March 11th and 12th. The advisory comes in response to rising temperatures across the region, with forecasts indicating that conditions are likely to intensify over the next two days.

The IMD warns that temperatures in certain areas may exceed normal summer levels. Residents of the affected districts are strongly urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

Data released by the IMD indicates a significant rise in temperatures across various districts in Karnataka between 8:30 a.m. on March 10th and 8:30 a.m. on March 11th. Dakshina Kannada is expected to experience a maximum temperature of approximately 37°C. Kalaburagi and Uttara Kannada districts are forecast to reach 36.6°C, while Haveri district is predicted to hit 36.4°C. Bagalkot, Belagavi, Shivamogga, and Dharwad districts are all expected to hover around 35°C.

Udupi district is anticipated to record a maximum temperature of 35.8°C. The minimum temperature in Dakshina Kannada is projected to be around 24.6°C. In contrast, the lowest temperature in the state was recorded in Chikkamagaluru district, at 16.2°C.

In light of the impending heatwave, authorities are advising the public to prioritize hydration by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. Individuals are also advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during peak hours, and to take proactive measures to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion. These measures include wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, seeking shade whenever possible, and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and well-being during this period of elevated temperatures.
