Hiriyadka: Two Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Cattle for Slaughter; Four Animals Rescued
Udupi: Hiriyadka police have arrested two men for allegedly stealing cattle grazing near Kukkuje village in Karkala taluk and transporting them to a slaughterhouse. Four cattle were rescued, and the goods tempo allegedly used to transport them was seized.
The arrested men are Abdul Sattar (54), a resident of Sarkarigudde, Subhash Nagar, Kurkalu village, Kaup taluk, and Yogish Naik (49), a resident of Maladabettu, Innanje village, Kaup taluk.
Around 7:30 p.m. on October 9, the crime detection team received information that cattle were being illegally transported in a goods tempo from Harikhandige towards Hiriyadka. Personnel spotted the vehicle near Kotnakatte in Bommarabettu village and signalled the driver to stop. However, the driver allegedly continued without stopping. After receiving the vehicle’s registration number, police intercepted the tempo near Anjaru Junction, opposite Hiriyadka Police Station, and searched it.
Four cattle were found inside the vehicle, which was occupied by two men, including the driver. During questioning, the accused allegedly admitted to stealing the animals from a grazing area near the house of Krishna Poojary, a resident of Palabettu in Kukkuje village, Karkala taluk. They were transporting the cattle to a slaughterhouse for sale, according to the preliminary investigation.
The cattle had allegedly been tied by their necks and legs with nylon ropes and transported without the required permission in a manner that caused them distress.
The rescued cattle are estimated to be worth approximately Rs 20,000, while the seized goods tempo is valued at around Rs 3 lakh.
A case has been registered at the Hiriyadka Police Station. The accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Udupi Sub-Division DySP Belliyappa and Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, with the assistance of Hiriyadka Police Station PSI Punit Kumar B. E. and other personnel.
