Homeless Woman Asha Gets Shelter at Mother Theresa Home

Mangaluru: A 45-year-old woman was rescued and admitted to Mother Theresa Home at Sturrock Road, Falnir here on July 30.

On July 30, team Mangalorean received a call from social activist Alwyn saying that a woman with a walker has fallen down on the side of the road near Big Bazar. Our team immediately reached the spot. Alwyn had in the meantime also informed the 108 Ambulance service and Urwa police.

When mangalorean.com spoke to Asha (45), who was lying on the side of the road, she said, “I was working as a helper in a hospital in Mangaluru. Two years ago, my son had a fall and died, near statebank. When I received the news on the phone regarding my son’s death, I was shocked, I immediately rushed down the steps of the hospital in a hurry to go and see my son, unfortunately, I slipped and fell down from the steps. I did not think much at that time even though I had some pain in my back. After some time my husband too died.”

She further said, “About a year ago, I got severe pain in my back, I got it checked and my back was operated. Since then, I am not able to walk without the help of a walker. Today without being able to walk, I fell on the side of the road. I have a daughter, who is married and settled in Kasaragod. I do not want to trouble her. Now I don’t have anyone to support me.”

The 108 ambulance reached the spot and shifted the woman to Mother Theresa Home with a letter issued by the Urwa police. Thanks to Alwyn, a good samaritan who saw the woman suffering from pain and informed mangalorean.com.

About Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity

Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity/Home for the Poor in Mangaluru was established in the year 1995. Their convent, Mother Theresa’s Home for the dying destitute, was situated at the 2nd Cross of Vas Lane at Falnir. They came to this place in 1997. Since then, many dying destitutes have experienced the caring and loving touch of Jesus through them. The donors of this site were Miss Agnes and Stanly William Pinto. The house donated by Miss Agnes at Lower Bendur was inaugurated by Blessed Teresa on 15th August 1995. She lived there with the sisters for six days. Stanly William Pinto gave his property including the house at Vas Lane. A new spacious house built on this site was inaugurated on 5th May 1998. Later in the year 2013, the Home was shifted and built at a new location on Sturrock Road.

Their mission is to love. Therefore, their doors are open to destitutes, those who are rejected by families due to addiction to drinks, drugs, smoking or other vices. The Home welcomes with open arms those who are sick and bedridden and are forsaken by family. At present, they are blessed with 27 destitutes, Catholics, Hindus and Muslims. “We don’t look at what religion you belong to when you come here. We only do what our Mother has told us,” said the Superior at the home quoting Mother Teresa herself, saying, “There is only one God and He is God to all; therefore it is important that everyone is seen as equal before God. I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic. We believe our work should be our example to people.”
