INTACH and Gili Vindu Commemorate Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai with Memorial Lecture
Mangaluru: The Mangaluru Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), in collaboration with Gili Vindu ® of the SVP Institute of Kannada Studies, Mangalore University, and Art Kanara Trust, paid tribute to the esteemed Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai with a memorial lecture held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture, Ballalbagh. The event, commencing at 5:00 p.m., coincided with the birth anniversary of the renowned poet, scholar, and playwright.

Manjeshwar Govinda Pai (1883–1963), the first to be honored with the title of “Rashtrakavi” (national poet) of Kannada in 1949, left an indelible mark on the literary and intellectual landscape of Karnataka. His celebrated works, including Vaishakhi, Golgotha, Gili Vindu, and Nandadeepa, stand as testaments to his profound understanding of human experience and his mastery of language. A polyglot proficient in approximately 22 languages, Govinda Pai’s scholarship continues to resonate deeply with scholars and enthusiasts alike.
Professor P. Krishnamoorthy, former Principal of Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal, served as the programme moderator and introduced the theme, emphasizing the importance of remembering the contributions of distinguished literary figures from the region. “This region has produced many distinguished literary figures, yet we tend to forget their contributions,” he stated. “Such gatherings to remember celebrated personalities like Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai help keep their legacy alive.”
The memorial lecture was delivered by Professor B. Shivarama Shetty, former Professor of the SVP Institute of Kannada Studies, Mangalore University, and the founder of Gili Vindu ®. Professor Shetty provided an insightful overview of Govinda Pai’s extensive body of work, stating, “Govinda Pai was a multilingual scholar deeply engaged with the realities around him. He wrote on themes of religion, harmony, pluralism, and peace. His works reflect on the lives and final moments of figures such as Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, and even Mahatma Gandhi. In today’s conflict-ridden world, his ideas remain profoundly relevant.”
Following the lecture, an engaging interactive session took place, focusing on Govinda Pai’s formative years, distinctive literary style, and significant contributions to Kannada literature. Panelists also discussed the pressing need to incorporate more of his works into school curricula to ensure future generations are acquainted with his profound insights. The discussion was expertly led by Fr. William D’Silva, senior researcher and lecturer; Dr. Satya Narayana Mallipattana, retired principal; Dr. Rajaram Tolpadi, retired professor; and artist and filmmaker Madhusudan Kumar.
The event was further graced by the presence of Dr. R. Narasimha Murthy and Dr. Vasudeva Belli, secretaries of Gili Vindu ®, and senior researcher Dr. Indira Heggade. Dr. Prasanna Rai added a poetic touch to the commemoration by reciting poems by Govinda Pai and Kayyar Kinhanna Rai.
Nemiraj Shetty, Co-Convener of INTACH Mangaluru Chapter, extended a warm welcome to all attendees. Rajendra Kedige, Executive Member of INTACH, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the memorial lecture. The event served as a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai and his profound impact on Kannada literature and culture.
