Jaltarang Jugalbandi Concert Delights Music Lovers in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Music lovers in Mangaluru had a rare opportunity to enjoy an instrumental musical performance on Sunday, October 25, when a Jaltarang recital was organised at Town Hall as part of the 31st anniversary celebrations of Bharatanjali (Regd.), a Mangaluru-based dance institution.

Vidushi Shashikala Dani, described as India’s only female Hindustani Jaltarang artist, and her son, Dr Sugnan Dani, captivated the audience with a Jaltarang jugalbandi.

The duo began with an alap in Raga Madhuvanti, followed by a fast-paced composition set to Teen Taal. Both artists showcased their remarkable musical skills, producing melodious notes from porcelain bowls filled with water. They subsequently presented a dhun based on Mishra Khamaj, along with devotional songs.

They were ably accompanied by Smt Srilatha Prabhu on the tabla, Smt Vandana Rani on the tamburi, and Shri Arun Dani on the manjira.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri Sachidananda Bharati Swamiji of Edneer Matha, who also delivered the benediction. On the occasion, Vidushi Shashikala Dani, recognised as the country’s only female Jaltarang artist graded ‘A’ by All India Radio, was felicitated by Bharatanjali Natya Samsthe.

Shri Agari Raghavendra Rao, who attended the event as the chief guest, conveyed his best wishes.

Shri Sridhara Holla, guru of the dance institution, welcomed the gathering and outlined its achievements. Smt. Pratima Holla proposed the vote of thanks.

The programme concluded with Jalanjali Nrityamruta, a Bharatanatyam presentation by students of Bharatanjali (Regd.), Kottara, Mangaluru.
