Kerala: BJP questions Satheesan govt’s 100 days achievements
Thiruvananthapuram: The V.D. Satheesan government’s completion of its first 100 days has turned into an occasion for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to launch a broad political attack, with state president and MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar accusing the administration of failing to live up to its election promises, adding to Kerala’s debt burden and resorting to communal politics to divert attention from its shortcomings.
Chandrasekhar, one of the BJP’s three MLAs in the Kerala Assembly, said the government’s first 100 days offered an appropriate moment to put its election promises under scrutiny. His verdict was unequivocal: Kerala had been left disappointed.
He claimed the government had gone before the electorate promising five guarantees but had implemented only one. “What happened to the other guarantees?” he asked, demanding that the government explain what had happened to the commitments that helped bring it to power.
The BJP leader also targeted the Congress‑led government’s promise to act against corruption during the previous CPI(M)‑led administration, alleging that those who had promised stringent action had so far failed to take meaningful steps.
Chandrasekhar questioned the government’s economic record, alleging that the administration had added Rs 12,500 crore to the state’s debt burden while failing to attract fresh investment or generate significant employment opportunities.
His sharpest charge concerned the government’s promise of non‑communal governance. He alleged that the Chief Minister had promised an administration free from communal politics but was now playing communal politics, acting on issues raised by the Indian Union Muslim League and Jamaat‑e‑Islami.
The BJP leader’s remarks come against the backdrop of the Congress‑led government’s political balancing within the United Democratic Front, and his attack appeared aimed at questioning the administration’s credentials on secular governance.
Chandrasekhar also attacked the government over the controversy surrounding the proposed division of the Palakkad railway division, accusing it of trying to present the issue as a major achievement and, in the process, mislead the people. He said the BJP stood firmly for the expansion of railway infrastructure in Kerala and would not allow the state’s interests to be compromised.
He called for a detailed discussion before any decision is taken on administrative reorganisation, including the proposed division of districts in Kerala.
The BJP state president sought a CBI probe into alleged irregularities surrounding the proposed visit of football star Lionel Messi to Kerala, arguing that the matter should not be left to the state Vigilance Department. He alleged that promises made in the sports sector were also turning into frauds, accusing the government of using controversies to shift public attention away from its failures.
The BJP’s attack marks an early attempt to build a political narrative around the Satheesan government’s performance. With the administration completing 100 days, the opposition party has sought to turn the milestone into a political report card: five guarantees promised, one delivered, and a growing list of questions demanding answers.
