Khadya Sangam 2020- a Inter Collegiate Events & Food Fest held at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru: The Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Food Science of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, conducted Khadya Sangam 2020 (Intercollegiate events and food fest) on 14th January, 2020 in Mother Teresa Peace Park of the College. Dr. L. Narasimha Murthy, Principal Scientist, Mumbai Research Centre, ICAR- Central Institute of Fisheries Technology was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme. Rev. Dr Leo D’Souza, Director of Applied Biology Lab of SAC was the Guest of Honour. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, Principal presided over the programme.

Dr Richard Gonsalves, Director of LCRI Block, Ms Shilpalekha, the Convenor of the programme, Dr S.N. Raghavendra, HOD of Food Science and Student Coordinators Jossy Koshy and Swathi Somayagi were on the dais. Dr. L Narasimha Murthy addressed the gathering about the food safety measures in marine food products. He urged the need to improve the safety standards of marine food products, import and export in thecountry. He emphasized on the processing of food products, handling, and preservation techniques detection of adulterant like formaldehyde.

Rev. Dr. Leo D’Souza SJ, Director of Applied Biology St. Aloysius College, conveyed the importance of Macro algae which is widely available in coastal region, having high nutritional value. Rev Dr.Praveen Martis SJ insisted the students to actively take part in research areaand to approach high nutritional value added products. The staff coordinator were Ms. Shilpalekha and the student coordinators were Ms. Jossy Koshy and Ms. Swathi Somayagi along with the HOD, Dr S.N. Raghavendra and other staff members and students who had put their effort to make this program a grand success.

New Food Products Developed by the MSc. students was launched by the Principal Rev. Dr. Praveen Martis S J of the college. The various new products developed by the students were Nutriblast Ladoo, Mango Tango, Hariyali Shots and Caramelized peanut cookies. Fest was highlighted with Diet counseling and variety of food stalls.

Various competitions were held all through the day with the enthusiastic participation of students from different colleges in and around Mangaluru. The founder and Chairman of BON Masala and Food Products, Mangalore, Mr. Joseph Dsilva was the chief guest for valedictory function. The Overall Championship was bagged by Mangalore University College and Runners up was bagged by Alva’s College, Moodbidri.
