Kodagu Activist calls Mysuru Tourists to Clean Up the Mess or Face Action!
Kodagu Activist Madettira Thimmaiah calls Mysuru Tourists to Clean Up the Mess they had made on Chettalli Road in Kodagu District, or Face Action from police!
Kodagu : First of all, BIG KUDOS to Kodagu Social Activist and honorary president of Gram Panchayat Madettira Thimmaiah for his quick action in making the tourists clean up the mess they had made on Chettalli Road in Kodagu District, with the help of the police on Friday, 30 October 2020. It is learnt that the tourists, who had ordered Dominos pizza, ate it in their car and discarded the box on the road near Kodagu Vidyalaya and made their way towards Mysuru.
Social activist Madettira Thimmaiah, who was traveling on the road, watched the act by the tourists and the waste they had discarded. Going through the waste, he found the receipt of the pizza purchase, which had the name and phone number of the purchaser on the bill and he quickly informed CPI Anup Madappa about the incident. The CPI called the tourists, asked them to come back and clean the waste they have littered. The activist also in a video which had gone viral had asked the people to call the number of the tourists who littered the area, and urge them to clean up the mess. And his idea did work miracles.

Within a couple of hours, the young group of tourists, Azeez Khan and his friends from Mysuru, who had discarded the waste, and who had reached Piriyapattana by the time they received the call- quickly responding to the call, they returned to the place where they had discarded the waste and cleaned the waste. Wow, seems like a good lesson taught to these young and educated youth, not to discard garbage anywhere they like, and compliments to activist Thimmaiah for his quick act, which needs to be followed by others, if they see anyone littering.
No doubt it’s hard for many to change their disgusting habits. Holding on to waste to dispose of it off into a bin is an alien concept to most of the people; as if the bottle of water or bag of chips or an empty pizza box, that was with them for a few hours becomes toxic the moment it gets empty. Education does not seem to have anything to do with what we have considered to be normal behavior. We have ordinances that call for steep fines. There should be a few cases where litterbugs are fined per prevailing law and this needs to be reported. The media exposure may cause people to behave civilized. Steep fines imposed and the fear of getting caught will cause people to change their habits. And it’s sad to note that the majority of the people who litter are the rich and the educated- who think they can get away with their richness and influential attitude. Heck no, activists like Madettira Thimmaiah should take them to task and teach them a lesson, to change their dirty habits.
