‘Lighthouse of Konkani Stage’ to bid ‘Adios’ to Kuwait

Kuwait: Irene Cardozo-e-Vaz, known as the ‘Lighthouse of Konkani Stage’, one of the most popular Konkani actresses in Kuwait is set to bid adieu.

Drama lovers in Kuwait were lucky to have an actress of Irene’s calibre; Irene took up to the stage in almost every show that was staged in Kuwait, enacting challenging roles.

During her early years in Goa, Irene was a regular participant in One Act Play competitions spotted early by renowned actor-director Mario Menezes and recommended to Goan Shakesphere late Rosario Rodrigues in whose masterpiece plays such as ‘FulamaniKolle’, ‘DolleUgddun Poi’ and ‘FuddleaVorsa,’ Irene performed stellar roles.

‘Sopnam’ was the first drama in which Rosario Rodrigues inducted her in his show as a professional. Later, Irene was roped in by Patrick Dourado and she shone in plays like ‘Nomoskar’ and ‘Tin FugotteancheMarann’.

Irene also acted for Jose Rod, Pascoal Rodrigues and many other well-known directors in Goa; and almost every director in Kuwait.

During her acting career, Irene has travelled to many parts of the world including the entire Middle-East Gulf.

Irene does any types of roles but her preference goes for tragic roles. She excels as a singer too. She was awarded best singer at competitions organized by Kala Academy. Bold and fluent in her dialogues, Irene’s performances in Kuwait were greatly applauded.

Having an MA in Philosophy, Irene worked as a teacher at Perpetual Convent, Navelim before settling down in Kuwait. During her scholastic career at school and college, Irene was a talented sports person. She represented Goa women’s team in football tournaments held in Rajasthan and Delhi.

In Kuwait, Irene worked for Industrial Electrical Projects Company. Irene was a catechist at the Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait City, and also a member of St Joaquim & Anne Choir that sings Fridays at 8am.

Irene will leave for Goa to be with her actor husband Sylvester Vaz, son Jeremiah and family.

Goan art and drama needs talented artistes like Irene. It is everyone’s wish that she lights up the stage in Goa once again. The Goan community in Kuwait wishes Irene all the best in her career forward.
