Local Advocates Want CBI to Probe into Mysterious Death of IPS Officer Madhukar Shetty

Mangaluru : speaking to Team Mangalorean over the phone, the former president of the Mangaluru Bar Association S.P. Chengappa said, “The government should conduct an inquiry by the CBI if a five-member committee of medical experts, appointed by the State government, says there is medical negligence in treating Indian Police Service Officer Madhukar Shetty, who died four months ago. A few of us local lawyers demand an inquiry by the CBI if the committee, appointed to find out the cause for his death, opines so.”

“We are also demanding that the government should name one of the police training centres in the State after Madhukar Shetty as promised by Home Minister M. B. Patil. The government should also take up some programmes to inspire the younger generations and carry forward the principles of late Shetty. Our committee has been constituted following suspicion expressed by Shetty’s family members and friends on whether he received proper and required medical treatment. Shetty who hails from Kundapur, was the son of well known journalist Vaddarse Raghuram Shetty. Officer Shetty known as a upright officer who fought against corruption till his last, died at a young age of 47 years at the Continental Hospital in Hyderabad on 28 December 2018” added Chengappa.

Late IPS Officer Madhukar Shetty

Chengappa further said , “Shetty is particularly remembered for his tough handling of investigation into the illegal mining in Ballari as the then Superintendent of Police in Lokayukta, and now he has left a mark in whatever position and responsibilities held, and for his efficiency in handling tough cases. After his stint with the Lokayuktha, Shetty went to USA on a five year sabbatical during which he obtained a Ph D in Public Administration from the Rockfeller College of Public Affairs and Policy in Albany-New York. Shetty was also appointed as a Deputy Director of Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Ploce academy-Hyderabad, where he rendered his service till his unfortunate death”.

Advocate S P Chengappa

“He was the illustrious son of DK who had won the hearts of the people whoever he served as an officer. For his outstanding service to the public of Chikamagalur Dist where he had served as as the SP, a small village is named after him and another outstanding Deputy Commissioner Sri Harsha Gupta as “Gupta-Shetty Village”. Shetty was an humble person and was instrumental along with Harsha Gupta in clearing encroachment of land by a rich coffee planter and also distributing the land to 32 landless Dalit families who had been evicted from the reserved forest area. It is quite tragic that Indian Police service has lost a gallant sincere and humble police officer Madhukar Shetty, and it is very impossible to fill the vacuum created by Him. Therefore we the admirers of Shetty hereby demand a CBI enquiry into the untimely death of Madhukar Shetty, if the committee of Medical Experts is of the opinion that there was a medical negligence in treating him in Hyderabad” concluded lawyer S P Chengappa.
