Malpe Tourist Boat Tragedy Claims Two Lives, One in Critical Condition

Malpe: A tragic incident occurred near Kodibengre Beach on Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of two individuals and leaving another in critical condition. The incident involved a tourist boat that capsized near the Hangarakatte shipbuilding area, where the river converges with the sea.

The deceased have been identified as Shankarappa, aged 22, and Sindhu, aged 23. Disha, aged 26, is currently in critical condition, while Dharmaraj, aged 26, is reported to be in stable condition. All four individuals were natives of Saraswathipuram in the Mysuru district and were reportedly employed at a call center in the area.

A group of fourteen tourists had arrived in Udupi for a recreational trip and embarked on a sea excursion aboard a tourist boat departing from Kodibengre Delta Beach. At approximately 12:00 noon, the boat unexpectedly capsized near the Hangarakatte shipbuilding area, where the river meets the sea.

The sudden capsizing resulted in all fourteen passengers being thrown into the water. Initial reports indicate that only a portion of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. Individuals on nearby boats promptly responded to the emergency, rescuing the passengers who had fallen into the water and transporting them back to shore.

Among those rescued, four were found to be in critical condition and were immediately transported to a hospital in Udupi for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, Shankarappa and Sindhu later succumbed to their conditions while receiving treatment, as confirmed by local police authorities. The incident is currently under investigation.
