Udupi: Shirva police have arrested a man for allegedly providing businessmen’s mobile phone numbers to underworld operative Hemant Poojary to make extortion calls demanding money.

The accused has been identified as Harish Poojary (45), a resident of Santur village.

Following the murder of Mudrangady businessman David D’Souza, underworld operative Hemant Poojary allegedly began targeting businessmen in the jurisdictions of Padubidri, Manipal, Kaup and Shirva police stations. He reportedly made calls from international numbers demanding crores of rupees and threatened to kill them in the same manner as David D’Souza if they failed to pay. A total of eight cases have been registered in connection with these threats at the Padubidri, Manipal, Kaup and Shirva police stations.

During the investigation into a case registered at Shirva Police Station, the police took the accused into custody for allegedly providing businessmen’s mobile phone numbers to Hemant Poojary and assisting him in the crime.

During interrogation, Harish Poojary reportedly admitted to providing the mobile numbers to Hemant Poojary and assisting him in carrying out the offence, police said.

Accordingly, he was arrested on November 2. The police also seized two mobile phones allegedly used in the crime. Harish Poojary was subsequently produced before the court, police said.
