Man Dies, Woman Injured in Crane Accident in Udupi

Udupi: A 65-year-old man, identified as Francis Furtado died on Saturday after falling from a crane basket while inspecting a slab leakage at a residence near the Public Works Department office on Court Back Road, Udupi. A woman, Sharada (35), who was working with him, sustained serious injuries in the incident and is currently admitted to the Ajjarakadu District Hospital.

According to reports, Francis Furtado had hired a crane to examine a leakage issue at his brother’s house. He and Sharada ascended in the crane’s basket when a belt supporting the basket reportedly snapped, causing both individuals to fall.

Following the incident, social worker Nityananda Olakadu arrived and transported the victims to the Ajjarakadu District Hospital. Francis Furtado was declared dead en route. Sharada’s condition is currently listed as serious.

Eyewitnesses reported that the crane operator left the scene without assisting the injured, prompting public condemnation.

Authorities have registered a case at the Udupi City Police Station and are investigating the matter.
